Who is driving

Four words that explain a pricing page better than four years of feature lists

Who is driving

Every pricing page I have ever built lied about what it was selling.

Not on purpose. It listed hours, features, seats, support levels. All true, all useless. Because nobody has ever looked at three columns of feature ticks and understood why the third one costs five times the first.

Last night I worked out what we are actually selling, and it took four words.

Who is driving

That is it. That is the whole ladder.

Starter Fuel. You drive. Coaching is built in, so you are not doing it blind, but your hands are on the wheel and your foot is on the pedal. Self starter fuel.

Regular Fuel. You drive, and somebody is in the passenger seat. A co-pilot reads the map, watches the mirrors, tells you the turn is coming up. You are still driving. You are just not alone in the car.

Premium Fuel. We are the pilot. You are the co-pilot. We take the wheel and you keep the destination, which is the only part that was ever yours anyway.

Let Go Boss. Fully autonomous. Nobody is in the car.

That last one is not released. It is coming, and I am saying that out loud rather than quietly leaving it off the page, because a ladder whose top rung is invisible looks like a ladder that ends at Premium. It does not. Premium is where somebody else drives. Let Go Boss is where the car does not need anybody.

Why this matters more than a pricing page

Because it is the same thing the whole business is about.

Letting go is not stopping work. It is the specific, uncomfortable act of taking your hands off a wheel you are perfectly capable of holding, and letting somebody else steer while you keep caring about where you end up. Every founder I have ever worked with can do the driving. Almost none of them can do the letting go.

So the plans are not tiers of service. They are stages of letting go. You move up this ladder by handing over more of the wheel, and the price goes up because handing over the wheel is worth more to you every time you do it.

Nobody buys hours. People buy the ability to stop doing something.

The other half

I also worked out that Insert Fuel is a game. Not gamified. A game.

There is a board, and it is the 10-Step Playbook we already run. There are stations along it with real places attached. There is a buddy you are paired with for life, and rules you agree to before you play. Your brand is your car and you get to design it, paint it, put your decals on it. Your tickets are laps.

Grand Theft Auto for business. That is what we are building, and I mean that as a description rather than a joke.

But the part I keep coming back to is the four words. Who is driving. I have been selling this for years and I have never once said it that plainly.

What this changes for you

If you are on Starter and you feel like you are doing all of it yourself, that is not a failure of the plan. That is the plan. The question worth asking is whether you are ready to have somebody in the passenger seat.

And if you are on Premium and you still have your hands on the wheel out of habit, that is the most expensive way to buy a driver there is.

Where are you actually sitting in the car? Tell me, because the honest answer is usually not the one on the invoice.

Not sure where to start?

You do not need to know what to ask for.

You have just finished “Who is driving”. Most people arrive here knowing something is not working without being able to name it, and that is completely fine. Tell us what your week actually looks like and we will do the naming. Thirty minutes, free, and you will leave with a clearer picture whether or not you ever work with us.

  • Come with a problem, not a specification
  • You leave with something you can act on either way
  • Plain English throughout. We promise
